"Black British History happened everywhere...not just in the cities" | Historian/Sociologist, Tré Ventour on uncovering Town and Country Black History | Before Our Friends Die #37

1 hour 5 minutes | Monday, 9 October 2023

Today we are joined by Tré Ventour-Griffiths - a neurodivergent practitioner-academic [pracademic], public historian, writer-poet, public sociologist, and PhD Student and wow does he have knowledge to share!

Tré is a PhD student at Kingston University exploring British Black Caribbean histories in the Town and Country and today we deep dive into his work so far. Our fascinating chat unearths the genesis of the “hostile environment” dating back to 1919, the UK’s first Black Self Help Centre, MFM (Matta Fancanta Movement), and Bob Marley’s appearance in Northampton!

This Black History Month, we get stuck into lived experiences of Black lives outside of London and capture the magic and hardship that has impacted over 3 generations of Black Brits.

Before Our Friends Die is a podcast on the akhi&saltfish Digital Network. The concept is: "Before Our Friends Die, we want them to know about..." and you, the audience, are our friends. Sometimes it's about having the conversations that often get overlooked yet feel urgent. Equally, it can be about speaking to someone who is where we want to be and asking them how they did it.

The Network also features:
- SOFA SENSE'S, where we talk about and to those in, the fight world!
- Cool. Fine. Done. Wicked. A podcast about music we’re passionate about.
If any of those catch your interest, subscribe and stay tuned, we’ve got more coming your way!
