Luton begin EFL Trophy defence with high-scoring win over Ipswich U21s

Luton Town began their defence of the EFL Trophy by thrashing the Ipswich Town under-21s 6-0 at Kenilworth Road.

Jordan Clark marked his 33rd birthday by scoring a first career hat-trick as part of the rout, with Devante Cole and academy duo Joe Johnson and Dawid Gawel also scoring for Jack Wilshere’s side in their first match of the newly renamed Jersey Mike’s Trophy. Cole, Johnson and Gawell all scored their first goals for Luton Town.

A comfortable victory represented a boost for the Hatters, who had lost each of their last two league games before the international break that they now face.

Luton’s next contest also comes in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy when they visit Colchester United, in a game that will take place on October 3rd in a rare game in the competition to take place on a Saturday.

Peterborough United complete their group, with the currently managerless Posh beating Colchester 3-1 at the same time as events at Kenilworth Road. Luton will host Peterborough in the final game of the group in mid-November.
