Families across West Northamptonshire are being encouraged to check whether they are now eligible for free school meals, following changes to the national eligibility criteria.
From the start of the 2026/27 academic year, all children attending school whose households receive Universal Credit will be entitled to a free school meal.
The changes mean that more families may now qualify for support. West Northamptonshire Council is encouraging parents and carers to check their eligibility and submit an application as soon as possible.
Parents and carers should note:
- If you have never applied before, check your eligibility and submit an application.
- If you applied before 1 June 2026, you should submit a new application as your previous application may not have been assessed using the updated eligibility criteria.
- If you applied on or after 1 June 2026, no further action is required as your application will be assessed using the current eligibility criteria.
Free school meals can help families reduce household costs while ensuring children receive a healthy meal during the school day.
Cllr Michael Stratton, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education at West Northamptonshire Council, said: "These changes mean that more families across West Northamptonshire could now benefit from free school meals.
"I would encourage any parent or carer who receives Universal Credit to check the updated eligibility criteria and submit an application if they have not already done so. Free school meals can make a real difference to family budgets and help ensure children are ready to learn throughout the school day."
