Refreshed Student Route supporting safer nights out

A walking route to help students get home safely after a night out in Northampton has been refreshed, with new signage and an updated map.

The Student Route aims to help new students find the safest, most well-lit route home from the town centre to the University of Northampton's Waterside Campus.

It has been in place for a number of years, but has been refreshed over the summer in time for the new academic term, with new route markers in place and an updated map available for download.

The relaunch is part of ongoing work by West Northamptonshire Council (WNC), the Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Northamptonshire Police and the University of Northampton, to help create a safe and welcoming night-time environment for students living and studying in the town.

Cllr Charlie Hastie, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities at WNC, said: “We want Northampton to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone. The refreshed Student Route gives students a clear, recognised way of travelling between the town centre and Waterside Campus, helping them feel more confident when making their way home after a night out.

“This is a great example of local organisations working together to support student safety and wellbeing.”

Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone said: “I am happy to be able to contribute to the creation of this route for students, who add so much to the vitality of Northampton. Creating safer public spaces is a real priority for me and I hope this initiative will help students feel confident and comfortable when they are here.”

People can download the latest Student Route map online and look out for the new flags marking the way home.
