West Northamptonshire Council approves new plan to improve cycling and walking in Northampton

West Northamptonshire Council’s Cabinet has approved the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Northampton.

The plan sets out how the Council will improve routes for people travelling on foot or by bike over the next ten years. It supports the Local Transport Plan, which aims to make active travel safer and easier for everyone. 

The plan looks at where people live, work and study, and identifies a priority list of projects to create better and safer walking and cycling networks across the town. The Council worked closely with local groups and organisations to develop the plan.

A public consultation ran from August to October 2025. Most people who took part supported the proposals and shared views about travel habits and the importance of safe active travel.

The responses helped the Council review the network proposals and better understand community priorities.

Following adoption of the plan, the Council will publish the final version on its website and begin early design work on the first set of schemes.

Councillor Richard Butler, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “I am pleased that we can now move forward with this important plan.

“People in Northampton told us they want safer and more attractive walking and cycling routes and this plan gives us a clear and practical way to deliver them.

“These improvements will help reduce congestion, support healthier lifestyles and make it easier for people to move around our town in a more sustainable way.”
