2:22 A Ghost Story at Milton Keynes Theatre is a gripping, spine-tingling ride from start to finish – a play that masterfully blends suspense, drama and moments of dark humour. The brilliance lies not just in Danny Robins’ clever, taut script, but in the way the characters’ relationships unravel as belief collides with scepticism, each dinner guest forced to take sides on whether ghosts are real.
Stacey Dooley shines in the lead role as Jenny, bringing an authenticity and natural warmth that makes her plight deeply relatable. Opposite her, Kevin Clifton is superbly insufferable as Sam, the smug, know-it-all scientist whose condescension keeps the audience both amused and infuriated. Their real-life chemistry enhances the authenticity of the couple’s friction, making the cracks in their marriage feel all the more believable.
Supported by Grant Kilburn as Ben and Shvorne Marks as Lauren, the ensemble captures the play’s mix of banter, tension, and mounting dread with flair. The atmosphere, heightened by clever staging and sharp sound design, has the audience holding their breath in anticipation of what might emerge in the silence before 2:22.
It’s a rare play that manages to be thought-provoking, frightening, and laugh-out-loud funny in equal measure. But what lingers long after the curtain falls is its disturbing final twist – one that will haunt you well beyond the theatre doors.
2:22 A Ghost Story is not just a ghost play – it’s a modern classic of suspense
