REVIEW: Jersey Boys at Wycombe Swan

Jersey Boys has landed at the Wycombe Swan, and plays until Saturday 29th August.

REVIEW: Jersey Boys | Monday 24th August | Steven Gordon-Wilson

Oh, What a Night indeed... I went to the opening night of the 20th Anniversary production of Jersey Boys this week at the Wycombe Swan and was blown away by the talent on stage. The four lead roles are four very different parts and each take a special kind of performer - and each role was played incredibly authentically. I always think that the hardest of the four roles to get right is Nick Massey - the quiet man of the group who adds the bass tones to the Four Seasons sound. Lewis Kennedy brings the role to life with an understated flair and was a joy to watch. Bob Gaudio is played admirably by Toby Miles - portraying the 'one-hit-wonder' turned musical empresario with ease. Tommy DeVito is the role that requires the most gumption and traditional Jersey swagger, which is delivered in spadeloads by the excellent Carlo Boumouglbay. Saving the best 'til last - the "so-good-it-was-spooky" portrayal of Frankie Valli by Luke Baker. His mannerisms, choreography, and most importantly his vocals were totally on point....he even looks a bit like a young Frankie Valli...inspired casting. Having previously seen him in a very different role in An Officer and a Gentleman, I went into the theatre with slight trepidation - but he absolutely smashed it.

The production itself was simple and effective with great use of TV cameras and screens, and little reliance on complicated props or scenery - just the performers and the spellbinding soundtrack.

Whether you're a diehard Four Seasons fan, or whether you've just stumbled across their music from cover versions and TikTok reels - you'll be dancing in your seat at this production of Jersey Boys which plays the Wycombe Swan until Saturday - tickets available now!
