Brackley Town relegated from National League after defeat away at Scunthorpe

Brackley Town have been relegated from the National League after a single season following a 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe.

A goal by Callum Roberts decided the game in favour of a Scunthorpe side who had been promoted with Brackley last season, with the result being the end of the Saints’ hopes of staying up.

Defeat in Lincolnshire means that Brackley have now gone 14 games without a win, with their last success having come on Valentine’s Day.

Brackley’s season ultimately unravelled after the departure of manager Gavin Cowan, who left the club in January to take a job with League 2 Shrewsbury Town. Although Gareth Dean managed a brief rally with an unbeaten run, the club’s form collapsed after the arrival of Andy Whing. The former Barrow boss is yet to win a game in charge of the Saints, with just 3 draws to his name.

Despite a season that saw Brackley reach the FA Cup and knock out Notts County, the team ultimately fell short in their ambition of making it two seasons in the fifth tier.

The result means that, with two games of the season remaining, all 4 National League relegation spots have been confirmed. Truro City and Braintree Town’s relegations had already been confirmed ahead of kick-off, while Morecambe will also go down after suffering back-to-back relegations following results yesterday.
