West Northamptonshire Council has successfully prosecuted a business for repeated fly tipping in Northampton.
Between February 2026 and March 2026 officers from West Northamptonshire Council’s Environmental Crime Team investigated three fly tips on Wellingborough Road, Northampton and one fly tip inside an alleyway on Lutterworth Road, Northampton.
During the investigation, evidence linked the waste in all four fly tips to Momo Land Ltd. The business co-operated with officers during the entire investigation.
On 06 October 2026 a representative/s of Momo Land Ltd located at House of Momo, 324 Wellingborough Road, Northampton, NN1 4EP attended Wellingborough Magistrates Court where they pleaded guilty on behalf of the company to four offences of fly tipping under section 33(1)(a) The Environmental Protection Act 1990.
The court imposed a fine of £2,000, victim surcharge of £800 and ordered the Council’s costs of £1,546.49 to be paid. The case was prosecuted by Ronald Sempebwa from West Northamptonshire Council’s in-house Legal Services team.
All businesses generate waste as part of their day-to-day operations and have a legal duty of care to ensure that any waste they produce is managed responsibly. This includes storing, transferring, transporting, and disposing of waste in a manner that does not harm the environment. Businesses must also maintain appropriate records to demonstrate compliance, which Environmental Crime officers may request to inspect at any time.
Cllr Andrew Last – Cabinet Member for HR, Corporate and Regulatory Services said: “Fly tipping is totally unacceptable and a huge problem for all councils. It attracts vermin, causes litter and gives a negative impression of our town centre.
“Whether you are a local business or resident, it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure they dispose of their waste properly. This could be via an allocated bin, a registered waste collection service, a legitimate skip company, or our bulky waste service.
“This case sends a strong message to those who may be tempted to fly tip. Our enforcement officers regularly patrol our town centres and breaches could result in a costly fine or formal enforcement action.
“We would encourage residents and businesses to report fly tipping to us via our app or the website so we can investigate. With sufficient evidence we will always take action against offenders, so please share with us any footage from doorbell cameras, CCTV or dashcams that might help identify offenders.”
