A CCTV camera at Wathen Wigg Bridge in Northampton is set to be reinstated to enhance safety in the area following a review by the West Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP).
The camera was previously in operation but was switched off in 2013 by the former Northampton Borough Council. At that time, the decision reflected the cost of maintaining the system and a lack of reported anti-social behaviour or crime in the area to justify its continued use.
However, following several serious incidents reported more recently, the CSP - which includes West Northamptonshire Council (WNC), Northamptonshire Police and other partner organisations - has reassessed the need for enhanced surveillance at the location. As a result, the Council is now progressing plans to reinstate CCTV coverage to help deter crime and support enforcement activity.
Funding for the camera is currently being identified, with installation expected to take place within the next few months. A widespread CCTV network across Northampton town centre remains fully operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and continues to play a vital role in deterring and detecting crime across the town.
"The safety and security of our residents is our top priority, and we work closely with partners to both address the root causes of crime and respond effectively when incidents do occur.
“While available evidence has not always indicated a significant problem with crime or anti-social behaviour in this area, recent incidents alongside a wider strategic CCTV review have provided clear justification for reinstating surveillance here.
“Working with our Community Safety Partnership, we are pleased to be moving forward with plans to reinstall a camera in this area, which will play an important role in helping to deter crime, tackle anti-social behaviour, and provide reassurance to local residents.” Cllr Charlie Hastie, WNC’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities
Residents are encouraged to continue to report any anti-social behaviour or concerns via the Council’s website.
