Update on cause of Bank Holiday house fire in Wellingborough

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a significant house fire at Prospero Drive in Wellingborough, shortly before 10.45am on Monday (May 25).

Several appliances attended and worked to extinguish the fire. Two off-duty firefighters who lived separately nearby were able to raise the alarm with residents prior to the arrival of the Fire Service.

Fire investigation officers returned to the property to try and determine a cause.

After examining the site, the investigator concluded at this time that the fire started accidentally, most likely due to an electrical fault in the loft.

Due to the structural integrity of the roof making it inaccessible for closer investigation, the Fire Service cannot say for certain where the electrical fault originated.

Area Manager Neil Sadler, from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This was a significant house fire on Bank Holiday Monday in a residential area, so we understand the concern and speculation that has followed.

“We have investigated the cause as thoroughly as we can, which has been made challenging due to the structural integrity of the building.  We will continue to support ongoing investigations as required. No further operational response is needed, and so we have closed the incident.

“We hope to be able to get out and about in the area next week to reassure residents and answer any questions they may have.”
