Colleagues described him as “the heartbeat of the West Northamptonshire gritting team,” Mark balances his winter maintenance role with serving as an on‑call firefighter, often reaching some of the toughest road incidents in either capacity.
His dual roles have even seen him attend road traffic collisions as a firefighter, then return later in his gritter to ensure the road remains safe for all other users.
Mark continues to support the next generation of drivers too, mentoring new recruits with patience and professionalism.
“I’ve seen first-hand through my firefighting role what an impact the winter weather can have on our local communities. Knowing we’re keeping people safe every time we go out gritting really is rewarding. I love the job, and the camaraderie keeps you going through the freezing nights. It’s such an honour to receive this award, and I dedicate it to my colleagues at the Brixworth depot and the whole gritter driving community.”Mark Hazle
“Residents like Mark are the backbone of our local communities, not only working hard to keep his local roads safe during the freezing weather but also being on hand to help and keep others safe as an on-call firefighter. I am delighted his dedication to public services in West Northamptonshire has been recognised with this national award and thank him for all his work over the past 15 years.”Councillor Richard Butler, West Northamptonshire Council Cabinet Member for Highways
“Mark exemplifies the culture of Kier – integrity, dedication and an unwavering focus on keeping people safe. Whether he’s gritting through the night or responding as a firefighter, his actions show genuine care for the community. This recognition is thoroughly deserved, and we are incredibly proud of him.”Allan Rigby, General Manager, Kier Infrastructure (highways maintenance contractor for West Northamptonshire Council)
