Man jailed for breaching sexual harm prevention order

A 28-year-old man who had a brief sexual relationship with a vulnerable woman has been sent back to prison for 20 months for breaching the terms of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

Vincent Miguel Curran of Northampton was issued with his first SHPO at the town’s magistrates’ court after he was convicted of the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in Northampton in June 2017.

The SHPO was issued with various conditions which he must abide by, however was amended in 2019, to include not to have any contact or communication with any female recognised as vulnerable by a statutory agency.

It also included not to reside, even for one night, at an address where there is a vulnerable female without prior approval from either social services or the police, and not to withhold information in respect to friendships or relationships.

However, between March 12 and March 14 this year, a vulnerable woman, who had been reported missing, was found at an address in Northampton, with Curran, and had been involved in a brief sexual relationship with him.

Curran was arrested and after pleading guilty to two counts of breaching his SHPO, he was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court on June 1, to one year and eight months in prison.

Her Honour Judge Adrienne Lucking told Curran that he had clearly formed, albeit a brief, sexual relationship with a young woman who he knew was very vulnerable, which he had then concealed.

HHJ Lucking said Curran was someone who has persistently breached orders and had a long history of breaching and disobedience to court orders, including three previous breaches of SHPO.

PC Will Corlett from Northamptonshire Police’s MOSOVO Team, said: “Protecting the most vulnerable people in our society is a matter of priority for the Force, and
we take the management of sex offenders extremely seriously.

“Vincent Curran rightly, has very strict notification requirements he is expected to abide by, to prevent him preying on vulnerable females however, he has shown a complete disregard and lack of respect for them.

“We take an absolute zero-tolerance approach to situations like this, and there is no room for manoeuvre. If a breach is identified, there are no second chances and just like Curran – offenders will be sent to prison.

“I hope this case demonstrates the Force’s commitment to bringing sex offenders to justice and keeping the public of Northamptonshire safe.”
