Visitors to Silverstone Museum can now step directly into one of Formula One's most fascinating stories following the UK premiere of the groundbreaking Black Cats & Chequered Flags immersive experience.
Created and produced by MIAT, the multiplayer Mixed Reality and Virtual Reality attraction has made its British debut at the home of British motorsport after previously premiering at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. The experience tells the remarkable story of Alberto Ascari, the first driver to win back-to-back Formula One World Championships and one of the most iconic figures from the sport's formative years.
Designed to blur the boundaries between history and technology, the 45-minute experience places visitors at the heart of 1950s Grand Prix racing. Wearing Ascari's distinctive blue racing helmet, gloves and goggles in a mixed reality environment, participants work together in a collaborative pit stop before joining the Italian legend on a virtual lap of the legendary Monza circuit.
The experience combines cutting-edge extended reality technology with authentic archival audio, 360-degree cinematography and period racing sounds to recreate one of motorsport's most significant eras.
The title, Black Cats & Chequered Flags, reflects the legendary superstitions surrounding Ascari's career. It explores the extraordinary highs that saw him become Ferrari's only Italian double Formula One World Champion, while also examining the fragile nature of success and fate that surrounded one of the sport's greatest competitors.
Ascari's connection with Silverstone makes the museum a fitting venue for the attraction's UK premiere. He first raced at the Northamptonshire circuit in 1948, finishing second in one of the earliest post-war British Grands Prix while driving for Maserati. Just a year later he claimed victory in the inaugural BRDC International Trophy for Ferrari before going on to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in both 1952 and 1953 during his consecutive World Championship-winning seasons.
Those achievements cemented his place in Formula One history. More than seven decades later, visitors can now relive many of those defining moments through an experience that combines storytelling, gaming and historical interpretation.
The attraction was selected for competition at the Venice Immersive section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival before attracting thousands of visitors during its run at the Ferrari Museum. Following its successful Italian debut, Silverstone Museum has become the first venue in the UK to host the experience.
The launch was marked by a special press and influencer event hosted by Sky Sports Formula One commentator David Croft, alongside representatives from Silverstone Museum and the creative team behind the project.
Phil Lawrie, Chief Executive of Silverstone Museum, welcomed the arrival of the attraction, describing it as another step forward in bringing motorsport history to life through innovative technology. The museum says the installation offers visitors a completely new way of engaging with one of Formula One's greatest stories while complementing its existing collection of historic racing cars, memorabilia and interactive exhibits.
The experience is suitable for visitors aged 13 and over and is fully wheelchair accessible. Tickets for Black Cats & Chequered Flags cost £20 per person and must be purchased in addition to museum admission. Due to limited capacity, advance booking is recommended.
With Formula One continuing to grow in popularity around the world, the arrival of Black Cats & Chequered Flags gives racing enthusiasts and newcomers alike the chance to experience the drama, excitement and emotion of the sport's early years in a way that has never before been available in the UK.
Whether you're a lifelong Formula One fan or simply curious about one of motorsport's greatest champions, the new attraction promises an immersive journey into the life, legacy and legend of Alberto Ascari at the very circuit where he helped shape Grand Prix history.
