Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage

There are some films that are so iconic that bringing them to the stage feels like a dangerous game. Dirty Dancing is one of them. Get the casting, dancing or chemistry wrong and the magic could disappear. Thankfully, this production gets it spectacularly right.

Opening its UK and Ireland tour in Milton Keynes this week, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage is a joyous, energetic and thoroughly entertaining celebration of everything audiences love about the movie. The production retains the much-loved characters and original dialogue from Eleanor Bergstein’s film, while bringing those familiar moments to spectacular life on stage.

The casting is simply perfect. Joel Benjamin makes an utterly convincing Johnny Castle, while Charlie Varlet brings warmth, innocence and determination to Baby. Together, they have the chemistry needed to make the central love story work, while Ellie Fergusson is superb as Penny.

And then, of course, there is the dancing.

Impeccable choreography, energetic ensemble numbers and some seriously impressive physical performances make this a show that barely gives you time to catch your breath. There are the moments everyone has come to see – the watermelons, the dancing, Hungry Eyes, Do You Love Me?, and, yes, that lift – but seeing them performed live gives them a completely different energy.

And there are certainly plenty of moments for the audience to appreciate Johnny's rather impressive physique too, with more than a few glistening pectoral muscles on display!

What makes the production work so well is that it doesn't simply try to recreate the film. It pays homage to those favourite moments that audiences know and love, but uses the theatre to make them feel fresh, immediate and genuinely exciting. The live music, choreography and performances combine to create an atmosphere that is infectious from beginning to end.

By the time I've Had the Time of My Life arrives, the audience is completely won over – and the standing ovation at the end felt thoroughly deserved. What's particularly lovely is how much the cast appear to be enjoying themselves. That enthusiasm is infectious and makes the whole production feel like a celebration rather than simply a recreation of a beloved film.

Dirty Dancing has opened its latest UK and Ireland tour in Milton Keynes before heading around the country, with the current production directed by Federico Bellone and choreographed by Austin Wilks.

If you're a fan of the movie, this is definitely one not to miss. Even if you've seen Dirty Dancing countless times, there's something rather special about watching Baby and Johnny come to life right in front of you.
