Top Hat at Milton Keynes Theatre is a dazzling celebration of golden age glamour that sweeps you away to the world of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
This Chichester Festival Theatre production sparkles with energy, wit and romance, brought vividly to life by its exceptional cast and creative team.
Phillip Attmore makes a superb UK debut as Jerry Travers, his effortless charisma and impeccable tap skills lighting up the stage. Opposite him, Amara Okereke is radiant as Dale Tremont, combining elegance with sharp comic timing. Together, their chemistry makes this unlikely tale of mistaken identity both captivating and thoroughly entertaining.
The choreography is a highlight – perfectly synchronised tap routines delivered with flair and precision, backed by Irving Berlin’s timeless score featuring Cheek to Cheek, Puttin’ on the Ritz and Let’s Face the Music and Dance. Kathleen Marshall’s direction ensures each number feels fresh yet faithful to its 1930s inspiration.
Visually, the production is a feast: Peter McKintosh’s art deco sets and lavish costumes shimmer under Tim Mitchell’s lighting design, with clever revolving staging that whisks the audience from London to Venice with cinematic style.
Supported by a strong ensemble including Sally Ann Triplett as the formidable Madge Hardwick and James Hume as the bumbling Horace, Top Hat captures the spirit of a bygone era while offering a joyous theatrical escape. Elegant, exhilarating, and endlessly entertaining, it is musical theatre at its most stylish.
