There’s something very likeable about Waitress. It’s funny, feel-good and packed with catchy songs, but underneath all the fun is a surprisingly powerful story about friendship, relationships, motherhood and finding the strength to change your life.

Based on the 2007 film, the musical follows Jenna, a talented pie maker stuck in a loveless and abusive marriage. When a new doctor arrives in town and a local baking competition gives her something to aim for, she starts to see that perhaps there is a way out.

The standout performance for me was Jenna. She was incredibly sympathetic and really drew you into her story, particularly during the more emotional moments. She Used to Be Mine was especially powerful and was one of those moments where the theatre seemed to completely fall silent.

The rest of the cast were excellent too, with everyone really embodying their characters. There’s plenty of comedy, particularly from Dawn and Ogie, while the friendship between Jenna, Becky and Dawn gives the show a lovely warmth.

It was a shame that Les Dennis was replaced by his understudy Dan O’Brien tonight, as I was looking forward to seeing Les in the role of Old Joe. That said, O’Brien stepped in and gave a solid performance.

Sara Bareilles’ music is another huge strength of the show, with a great mix of upbeat numbers and more emotional songs. The staging looks fantastic and the whole production has a lovely energy which keeps things moving.

Waitress manages to be funny without losing sight of its more serious story, and emotional without becoming overly heavy. It’s a really enjoyable night at the theatre, with a brilliant cast and plenty of heart.

And yes, you’ll probably leave wanting pie.
