Residents across West Northamptonshire are benefiting from cleaner, healthier air, with new data confirming the removal of four more Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs).
West Northamptonshire Council’s latest findings show that nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels have remained below national objectives across a number of designated areas for at least three consecutive years. This sustained compliance means that four AQMAs – covering Watling Street, Towcester and Northampton’s Victoria Promenade, Campbell Square and St Michael’s Road – have been formally revoked in line with national guidance.
The Council will continue to monitor air quality across the area and three AQMAs at Bradshaw Street, St James and Harborough Road Northampton will remain in place and continue to receive focused attention in line with our published Action Plan. Air quality monitoring is ongoing at more than 140 locations across West Northamptonshire to ensure continued compliance with national air quality objectives.
“We’re really pleased to see continued improvements in air quality across West Northamptonshire. Revoking these Air Quality Management Areas is a positive step and reflects the progress we’ve made in reducing pollution and protecting public health.
“Cleaner air benefits everyone – from improving the health of our residents to making our communities more attractive places to live and work. While this is encouraging progress, we know there is more to do, and we will continue to monitor air quality closely and take action where it’s needed most.”Cllr Andrew Last, Cabinet Member for HR, Corporate and Regulatory Services
The Council, which has statutory duties under the Local Air Quality Management Framework, continues to work with partners to deliver measures set out in its Air Quality Action Plan, with ongoing initiatives to reduce emissions, encourage more sustainable travel, and support healthier lifestyles.
Residents can also access the new DEFRA UK AIR Local Air Quality Dashboard which brings together monitoring data, air quality management areas and actions in one place, allowing users to search by postcode and explore air quality information for their area. A 5-day air pollution forecast is also available.
