More residents to benefit from technology that supports independent living

More people across West Northamptonshire will be supported to live independently, safely and confidently in their own homes for longer thanks to increased use of technology in adult social care. West Northamptonshire Council's Cabinet has approved a new approach that will see technology considered earlier as part of adult social care support, helping residents access practical solutions that promote independence, reduce the need for more intensive services and enable people to stay connected to their communities.

Under the new Technology Enabled Care (TEC) Strategy, the Council will build on the technology already being used successfully across West Northamptonshire and continue developing innovative solutions that help people remain safe, well and in control of their daily lives, while giving carers greater peace of mind.

Technology Enabled Care includes a wide range of digital and assistive technology, such as personal alarms, falls detectors, GPS trackers, medication reminders, remote monitoring devices and digital tools that support people to manage their health and wellbeing. The strategy introduces a ‘TEC First’ approach, meaning technology will be considered as part of assessments wherever it can help people remain independent and achieve better outcomes.

The strategy reflects the Council’s commitment to prevention and early intervention, helping people stay in familiar surroundings, maintain their independence and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions or long-term care where appropriate. It also aims to reduce pressure on unpaid carers by offering reassurance and practical support through technology.

A key focus of the strategy is ensuring no one is left behind. The Council will continue to tackle digital exclusion by improving access to technology, supporting digital skills development and working with partners to ensure residents can benefit from new innovations regardless of their circumstances.

Councillor Laura Couse, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health at West Northamptonshire Council, said: “People in West Northamptonshire want to live their lives as independently as possible, and for as long as possible. Embracing Technology Enabled Care (TEC) helps enable people, with the right support, to do just that.

“Technology Enabled Care (TEC) is already making a significant difference to residents’ lives, helping people stay safe at home, remain connected to their communities and giving families a much greater peace of mind.

“This strategy sets out how we will build on that success over the next five years by embracing innovation while keeping people at the heart of everything we do. Importantly, this is not about replacing personal care and support, but enhancing it, helping people maintain their independence, prevent problems from escalating and improve their quality of life.”

The strategy was developed with input from residents who use technology-enabled care services, experts by experience, partners and staff, helping to ensure it reflects the needs and priorities of people across West Northamptonshire.
