Nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of UK homeowners confessed they might not immediately hear about a recall on an appliance they own. One in five (20 per cent) couldn’t remember if they had registered their large appliances and less than half (46 per cent) had registered all their major white goods.
These sobering revelations emerge from a new survey by OnePoll[1] for the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA), as part of Register My Appliance Week (19-23 January 2026), which looked at those small jobs and tasks around the house that are often so delayed they end up costing more.
From dripping taps and over-flowing gutters to unusually noisy washing machines or fridges, the vast majority (81per cent) of those polled agreed that putting off fixing issues could cause more problems or expense.
With washing machines, fridge freezers, ovens and microwaves practically universally owned, unregistered products remain extremely hard to trace if a safety repair is ever needed. Homeowners represent nearly two thirds (sixty five percent)[2] of the UK’s 29 million householders who – unlike tenants – are wholly responsible for their home purchases and admin.
While 94 per cent of homeowners feel it’s important to keep large appliances in good condition, 28 per cent admitted they rarely check them for potential problems.
Those who hadn’t registered their appliances said it was because they thought it was too old (25 per cent), didn’t see the benefit (24 percent) or simply forgot at the time (16 percent).
Today, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting Register My Appliance Week (19 – 23 January 2026) and urging all households to register their machines, to ensure their manufacturer knows where to find them in case a free safety repair is ever needed. Whether newly purchased, long installed or pre-loved, registration is vital to help ensure the longest possible safe lifespan.
Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service Prevention Team Leader, Tina Collett said: “It’s vital to ensure that these machines we rely on everyday are registered. It’s quick as well as absolutely free and means you will be the first to know if a safety repair is ever needed. Just a few minutes well spent will ensure you can relax, enjoy the machine’s perks and even possibly extend its lifespan without sacrificing safety.”
The survey also revealed high dishwasher ownership among UK homeowners, with 59 per cent now running a dishwasher, rising to more than 60% among Millennials. Further examining the generational divide Millennials also claim the highest percentage who have yet to register all their appliances (63%).
Recalls on home appliances are rare but issues with the equipment can develop over time and a simple, free in-home adjustment by a qualified engineer can ensure a longer and safer life for machines. But, unlike our cars for which logging details is mandatory, a vast number of these valuable possessions are still untraceable because they are unregistered.
AMDEA’s Register My Appliance portal provides a quick and easy remedy offering online access to more than 70 leading brands, with most accepting registration of both new and older appliances.
