Take one small habit swap this January – free support to help you quit smoking19 January 2026
As we welcome the new year, people across West Northamptonshire are encouraged to start their journey to stop smoking by focusing on just one small habit at a time. Rather than overwhelming yourself with the thought of quitting cold turkey, this approach offers manageable, sustainable changes that can have a real impact.
Smoking is often tied to routines, such as that morning coffee, a work break, or socialising with friends. This January, we’re encouraging people to try:
- Take a short walk instead of your usual cigarette break
- Chew gum or enjoy a healthy snack to mimic the hand-to-mouth action
- Use a fidget toy or stress ball to keep your hands busy
- Make a warm cosy tea or coffee instead of lighting a cigarette within a social setting, helping to break the smoking cycle during social moments
The goal is to keep your routine, but replace smoking with a healthier choice, gradually reducing your dependence on cigarettes with support from our free service.
West Northamptonshire Council’s Stop Smoking Service offers free support at every stage of your quitting journey. Whether it’s your first time trying or you’ve tried before, the service includes:
- Personalised support to identify your smoking habits and triggers
- Free nicotine replacement products, tailored to your needs
- Flexible, local support
Stopping smoking doesn’t have to be all or nothing. By starting with one simple change today, you could make a big difference for your future, not just for your health, but for those around you. Every cigarette you exchange for a different, healthy action moves you closer to quitting for good, which will reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, and breathing problems, while protecting loved ones from harmful second-hand smoke. Our free support is here to help you every step of the way.Cllr Laura Couse, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Public Health at West Northamptonshire Council
