A single goal was enough to beat Northampton Town as the Cobblers lost 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers.
Bobby Faulkner scored the only goal of the night in the final stages of the first half to secure a first away win of the season for the visitors, with Northampton missing out on a chance to grab back-to-back wins.
The Cobblers had been looking to make it 2 wins in a row for the first time in 13 months, but found themselves unable to follow up Saturday’s win at Grimsby with another three points on their own turf.
Buoyed by the weekend win in Lincolnshire, Northampton began brightly, with Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh denied by a fine save from Tranmere goalkeeper Luke McGee in the opening phase of the match.
Chris Hogg’s side looked the likelier to open the scoring in the first part, with McGee also denying Owen Dale and Matty Warhurst while Dale would put another shot just wide of the target.
But with 37 minutes on the clock, Tranmere would surprise the home side by taking the lead. Faulkner would meet Will Vaulks’ corner and guide a header past the reach of Zach Jeacock. The goal would ultimately turn out to be Tranmere’s only shot on target of the whole match.
Warhurst would force another save out of McGee in the final stages of the first half, but the second would be a more grating affair for the Cobblers faithful as Northampton were unable to find a way through and would ultimately slide to a defeat.
Northampton will look to try again on Saturday when they host Colchester United at Sixfields.
