Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle sails confidently through the previously uncharted terrirory between Derren Brown and Tommy Cooper, bringing the comedy genius of the team behind The Play That Goes Wrong (Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer) and the magical genius of Penn and Teller to the stage. The result is an uproariously funny comedy magic show featuring a down-on-his-luck illusionist whose mishaps are just as entertaining as his successful tricks.
Even before the lights are dimmed, you're thrust into the chaotic world of the Mind Mangler (Henry Lewis) with the signature Mischief Theatre pre-show antics (get into the auditorium early!). The Mind Mangler's hapless mentalism is played to perfection as his attempts at mind reading and illusion often spiraled into comical disasters, often caused by his stooge Steve played by Jonathan Sayer although every so often, he pulls off a trick that leaves everyone (including himself it seems) wondering how it was done.
One of the most memorable moments came when the Mind Mangler attempted to bend a spoon. While he struggled, the metal stage truss behind him inexplicably bent.
Audience participation is a big part of the show, and if you're in the stalls don't be surprised if you find yourself becoming part of the act. The interaction between the Mind Mangler and the audience was unpredictable and chaotic and whether the participants were genuine audience members or cleverly placed 'plants', their involvement was hilarious.
Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle, with its origins in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and development by a team including Penn Jillette and Teller, has evolved into a two-act show that captivates and delights. The combination of hilarious blunders and astonishing tricks makes it a must-see.
