Callum Marshall scored a stoppage-time winner as Luton Town were 2-1 winners over Leicester City at Kenilworth Road.
The Hatters had taken the lead through Nahki Wells, but despite Foxes skipper John Lundstram being sent off, it looked as though Leicester had stolen a point when Liam Cullen scored in the final minute of the 90.
In added time, however, Luton had other ideas, as Marshall grabbed the winning goal. The strike saw Luton make it back-to-back home wins, with the Hatters climbing above Leicester and into the top 10 in the developing third tier table.
Buoyed by a midweek win over Barnsley at Kenilworth Road, Luton began quickly. Alex McCarthy made a big early stop to deny Tudor Mendel, with the keeper later making another big stop to thwart Kasey Palmer and the Foxes keeper would also deny Wells at the following corner.
Kamari Doyle would then come close for Leicester as he was denied by home keeper James Shea before the Foxes would see a goal eventually disallowed. Leicester thought they’d scored when Emil Riis tapped the ball home, but after a consultation between the officials, the goal was ruled out for offside against the former Preston striker.
Having had the decision go in their favour, things then got even better for Luton after they took a 39th minute lead. Caleb Okoli dallied in possession, allowing Jordan Clark to steal possession and Clark duly squared for Wells to roll it past McCarthy.
Leicester struggled for momentum for much of the second half, with an errant Lundstram strike the best opportunity they put together, and the Hatters nearly moved further ahead when McCarthy denied Kal Naismith’s free-kick and Wells headed wide from a follow-up cross.
As the game approached the latter stages, the Foxes belatedly had more opportunities, with Warren O’Hora heading wide before Shea denied Conor Chaplin.
With 5 minutes of the 90 to play, Leicester then had a man sent off, as a heavy challenge by captain Lundstram was enough for him to get a second yellow cards and with it dismissal.
But with 30 seconds of the 90 remaining, the visitors were back on level terms as Riis passed for Cullen to steer a fine shot into the back of the Luton net.
Luton weren’t to be denied, as in the fourth minute of stoppage time, substitute Emilio Lawrence’s cross found its way to Marshall at the back post to tap it in.
The game would ultimately reach 11 minutes of stoppage time, but Luton resisted Leicester’s attempts to try and grab a second equaliser, allowing them to take a big result against the misfiring one-time Premier League champions.
An opportunity for Luton to win three home matches now awaits when they welcome Doncaster to Kenilworth Road on Tuesday.
